You can watch the interview (in 9 parts) starting here. Argento rarely makes American appearances like this so it was fun to see him speak, and he was in good humor and offered some great stories. He recently released his first film in a decade, Dark Glasses, which I intend to see very shortly. But he is now 81 years old, and I imagine that perhaps English is not as fluent as it used to be, although he still seems to understand a lot when it is spoken. It was interesting to watch Argento speak through a translator because when I interviewed him on the phone 14 years ago, he spoke in English the whole time. (Again, it was the Italian dub but this time with English subtitles.) An added treat was the fact that the director/co-writer himself was there to answer questions presented by journalist Maitland Donagh after the screening. ![]() I finally got to see the movie again on a big screen, probably a bigger screen than I saw it on originally and with superior sound, as part of a 20-film Dario Argento retrospective held by Lincoln Center between June 17th and 29th. It seems like third time was the charm on June 19th. I enjoyed the Anchor Bay DVD reissue in the mid-2000s this time it was the English dub. (Photo by Bryan Reesman.) Phenomena was released as the heavily edited/censored Creepers in America (reportedly a full 20 minutes shorter), but by the time I got to watching it again it was back to its original title and length. I’m glad the theater was not that crowded back then or many people likely would have been shushing us.Īrgento waves to the audience at the end of Q&A. As I and my classmates had learned regular Spanish - I could never figure why my high school would send me to a part of Spain were they spoke a different dialect, although the city was amazing - I had no idea what anyone onscreen was saying, so Paco had to translate for me. I saw the Italian dub of the film in a Barcelona theater with Catalan subtitles. She befriends a local forensic entomologist ( Halloween‘s Donald Pleasance) who is helping police track down a grisly killer who could endanger them both. My host student Paco took me to see the movie which starred a young Jennifer Connelly as a boarding school student who can commune with and summon insects. I first saw his creepy crawly horror film from 1985 while I was on a high school exchange trip to Barcelona in the spring of 1986. ![]() ![]() (Photo by Bryan Reesman.)I have an unusual relationship with Dario Argento‘s Phenomena.
